4645 Delafield Avenue - Riverdale, New York

Why don't more people know about Riverdale? It's one of the great places anywhere to live.Where else can you still be in New York City, 10 minutes from the upper west side, and at the same time have all of this around you. An acre of land, a house unlike any other, " wait until I show you the turret" the owner told me, (and yes, how many owners are there who can make that same statement) during our first meeting which lasted over 4 hours; half of which was simply spent touring the property, the house, and hearing the love and effort that was put into his 4 year gut renovation, and expansion, of his double lot home."We have two swimming pools, that zip line there I built for my son; I can't tell you how many times he and his friends have enjoyed that. I built the treehouse for him, and he uses this extra part of the backyard to ride his dirt bike. How many city kids, can do that?? To which I had no reply."I built this house to last forever... And I put my heart and soul into it. See those cobblestones, I laid those all myself, and built this back entrance. No, I don't use it, but someone can. Over here was where I was going to have my best friend build a house for himself (on the owner's second lot). It would have been a blast to have him right here. How big would it have been, I inquired? I'm not sure exactly, but probably about 2,000 or more square feet, a sweet little house, if he had wanted to do this. The history of this house, and this area is incredible, I built heated floors, and this enclosed private area is where I built the new pool. I love its privacy. These walls were hand painted by a friend, who was an exceptional artist. Up there (above the kitchen) is where I built my Juliet balcony for my wife. Yes, I know it's corny, but that's what she is for me. I'll show it to you later. These walls and moldings (referring to his den, where his daughter was with a tutor that night) were all done in maple and are over 4 inches; and see the coffered ceiling, this guy was a true artist, and the metal gates, we had hand fashioned. We entertain friends, host fundraisers, have had lectures with 100 people, we host authors and have readings, and the kids love to play here too (as we toured the living room). Yeah, I guess it's still a work in progress, as much as I've done, there's that much more I would do, but I think that's for the next owner, to add his own imprint on this house.?Here are some comps in the neighborhood, I mentioned to him. " There isn't anything else like this house, it's one of a kind, and when someone sees this, it will catch their eye, the way it caught mine; they just won't have to spend 4 years to make it what I did. But I'm sure they will improve on it, and that's what will make it theirs. We have two other sections. There's a one bedroom here, and over there, a two bedroom, as he showed us two more private sections for guests, parents, nannies. It's absolutely private. This chandelier is from the original house, these doors date back before I can even tell you, as we toured the turret of the house. It's really a den for my guests. That fireplace, sure it works, in a room where it has a sofa and chairs, is an incredible room to sit in.When in the basement, I have enough electricity to light up a small city. When the power went out a few years ago, my house was the only one with lights anywhere (because of the backup generators). We had neighbors from everywhere around staying with us.No the kids don't use the intercom system I installed, but they could if they didnt prefer yelling, Daaaad. Or Moooommm.I had all of these windows (from the original house), sent out stripped down and had new glass added, and then reinstalled. Yeah, I know it sounds a little crazy, but I wanted to retain some of that original feeling from the last century with the casement windows. The wall of windows in the kitchen, they didn't even exist, we just added those all in.As for the master bedroom with the cathedral ceilings, I would have gone higher, but my wife just wouldn't let me. The laundry room upstairs, just always made more sense to us, rather than running downstairs to do the laundry. These beams will withstand anything, he proferred when we were on the front patio.?Why don't more people come to Riverdale......? After this visit, we are asking ourselves the same question. Come visit and find out for yourselves the hidden gem in plain sight which is the exclusive Fieldston section of Riverdale - Home to the Kennedy's, the Cardinal, Carly Simon, and Archie Jughead, Betty and Veronica, though this house would likely have been the latters.
